Selected typical cast buildings of PCI in the United States (XI) – Application of precast concrete hollow slab in complex buildings

To help achieve this goal, designers specify the use of precast concrete hollow slabs in structural floors.

Several areas in the assemblyrow complex developed by the federal realty investment trust (* federal real estate investment trust) have a total of more than 600000 square feet (* 600000 square feet ≈ 55742 square meters) of commercial area, 1800 residential apartments and 2.8 million square feet (* about 260129 square meters) of office area.

The ongoing part is plot 5A – including alloyresidences and AC Hotel on the 13th floor; Plot 6 – an apartment building with 273 units on 20 floors, including wood structure with 174 units on 6 floors and precast concrete parking lot with 650 parking spaces on 7 floors.

Jake McManus, the project director of Procon, the designer and constructor of plot 5A project, and Brian R., the senior project manager Knox explained: “there are some important factors for the use of precast hollow slabs in plot 5A project, several of which are related to the cold winter conditions prevailing during construction.” Controlled manufacturing they pointed out: “in the 5A plot project, the hollow slab can be processed and produced in a temperature controlled environment, so that it can be installed and constructed in winter.” “The precast hollow slab makes the on-site installation faster, and the floor can be handed over to the internal and external frame construction team in advance.

On the other hand, the hollow slab has lower requirements for floor height.

Under the same clear height requirements, the requirements for floor height of hollow slab structure are much lower than those of steel structure.” There are about 1240 hollow slabs in the assemblyrow complex, totaling 206000 square feet (* about 19138 square meters).

The thickness of the hollow slab is 8 inches (* about 20cm) and the width is 8 feet (* about 2.4m), which can adapt to the design changes of the two wings in the L-shaped building..
