When conducting steel structure fire protection design, the fire resistance requirements of roof components and floor components are different.

Is the roof steel beam a beam or a load-bearing component of the roof? The reason for this controversy in civil engineering is that Article 5.1.2 of the “Code for Fire Protection Design of Buildings” GB50016-2014 stipulates that there are two types of components: “beam” and “roof load-bearing component”, but whether the roof beam belongs to “roof load-bearing component” or “beam” is not specified.

So, “bricklayers” believe that “beams” include both floor beams and roof beams, and the fire resistance time of roof beams should be high.

Article 3.1.1 of the “Technical Code for Fire Protection of Steel Structures in Buildings” GB51249-2017 of Shuguang Civil Engineering Bar states that the “beam” in the “Code for Fire Protection Design of Buildings” GB50016-2014 is described as “floor beam, floor truss, and floor support”, which means that this “beam” is of the floor and does not include roof beams.

However, some “brick experts” still believe that the “roof load-bearing components, roof supports, and tie bars” in the table do not specify the roof beam, so the roof beam should be taken safely like the floor beam.

Fortunately, according to the Civil Engineering Bar, Article 2.1.9 of the “Technical Code for Fire Protection of Building Steel Structures” CECS200:2006 provides an explanation of the roof load-bearing components: the main structural components used to withstand roof loads.

For example, the components that make up roof grids, shells, trusses, and roof beams, supports, etc.

Roof purlins are generally not considered as load-bearing components of the roof, but when they simultaneously serve as support for the roof structural system, they should be considered as load-bearing components of the roof.

The fire responsibility of civil engineering bars is greater than the day, and once there is ambiguity in the regulations, everyone is more willing to strictly enforce them.

Why does the standard not differentiate between “floor load-bearing components” and “roof load-bearing components”, but rather between “beams” and “roof load-bearing components”? The floor can also be supported by trusses or horizontal supports.
